Tanoeiros Residence by An Island Apart

Funchal

10/10 Exceptional

Excellent property right in the centre of Funchal. We stayed in the top floor apartment V, which had a lovely balcony that has a side view towards the see and sunshine from midday. The kitchen is full of all utensils and cleaning products. Tupperware came in handy to take on hikes with you. There are a couple of points to note. There is no lift so you need to make sure you can climb plenty of steps. The mattress is quite firm and the building carries the noise so you can hear a lot of things...

Porto Mare Hotel, by PortoBay

Funchal

10/10 Exceptional

The hotel is situated on a main road (no noise problems though) which gives great links to the main buses in to Funchal, including a courtesy bus from the hotel, and the open top tour buses. The hotel says 4 star but how it isn't a 5 star I will never know! The hotel is home to beautiful gardens, including an orchid garden, making the scenery even more beautiful. Butterflies are always flying around and it just feels like paradise. The hotel is clean and maintained thoroughly everyday, they...

Suite Hotel Eden Mar, by PortoBay

10/10 Exceptional

This was our first time in Funchal, but our choice of hotel was excellent. The suite was of a good size and well supported with equipment for our needs. The balcony was great, and we had a lovely view of the sea. It was a little noisier than we were expecting, but part of that was due to a nearby hotel being renovated. I expect that rooms facing the interior of the hotel would be quieter. The ensuite was very practical and the rooms were cleaned each day to a very high standard. Towels were also...

We had a very pleasant stay in the Melia last week. The staff were friendly and very helpful Nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was excellent and there was always a chef on hand to make something if it was not already on offer. The hotel is nicely situated with an indoor and an outdoor pool. These are very well looked after and towels, sunbeds and umbrellas are available. There are plenty of restaurants of a good quality within walking distance of the hotel. Reid's Hotel is also...

Pestana Carlton Madeira Ocean Resort Hotel

Funchal

10/10 Exceptional

This was our first trip to Madeira, and we found the hotel lived up to our expectations in all ways. We were unable to have a sea view, but looking out from our 18th floor room across part of the town, which was beautifully lit, and the mountains, was so lovely that we didn't close our curtains, just so we could look out if we awoke in the night. A joyful experience that we hope to repeat at some time

The Vidamar more than met expectation. We knew the location was good---i.e. walking distance into old town of Funchal -- as we have stayed in this area before. However, the Vidamar, was by far a superior hotel. We were welcomed warmly by staff, and that set the trend for the week. The food was exceptional, with so much to choose from. I stayed at Ocean Gardens Hotel for two weeks in March 2015. The staff were friendly and helpful and knowledgeable about the surrounding area. The hotel was clean and comfortable (although the mattress on the bed was a bit too hard for my liking). Rooms were serviced daily. Downside - this hotel is on the outskirts of Funchal, which could be an inconvenience if you wished to be in the middle of everything, but does run a shuttle bus to the town centre - which is free. My only...

This is a lovely, comfortable, hotel with spacious rooms and great service. The terrace has a spectacular view of Funchal and was great for breakfast, where we also enjoyed the complementary bubbles! The pool is small, but adequate, and the pool area also faces the town and ocean (though sun loungers need an "upgrade" as they are quite worn).
