The Grand Hotel & Spa
A little piece of heaven in the city.
Beautiful hotel, very clean and staff are exemplary, nothing is too much trouble. Great nights sleep, very comfortable and ideal location.

Guest service
As a guest one should be able to expect politeness and good service from all the hotel staff, but this was not the case. They made me feel invisible every time I walked in or out of the hotel entrance, whereas the person I was travelling with was greeted and treated in a very different way.

Nice place but watch for the little extras!
We got a good price on but it could have gone silly skyward when we arrived. The concierge swooped on us as we arrived, gave me a ticket for the car and asked for the keys to go and park it. I said it wasn't necessary as I could park it myself and I may want extra things out of it anyway... Like Sheriff John Wayne he said "that's the way we do things around here sir". Whisked into check in we were given a sort of hard sell on breakfast too. Book there and then and we get a £5 reduction off the princely sum of, wait for it... £25 per head breakfast....oh and only if you eat up before 9am as it goes back to £25 otherwise. On the plus side however, the room was nice, clean and spacious. Air con was stuck on when we got to the room and it was freezing BUT was repaired swiftly (and remotely) by a very helpful Lee, the technician. Seems the building was the old British Rail HQ originally and only a hotel since 2008. Full of old world charm. Didn't eat in hotel so popped out for breakfast next morning.. Don't miss a quaint little cafe by the river called the Perky Peacock. Great coffee and lovely food. Lastly dear reader, if you're still with me... we checked out. Lovely lady at reception tells us that we have a £30 Valet Parking charge!! I explained that a) I didn't want them to park my car in the first place but b) No parking charge was ever discussed. She swiftly apologised and removed the unauthorised charge from our bill.

A gem of a hotel
An exceptional hotel with friendly but professional staff. Centrally located with all mod cons and ammenities. Prestigious old building lovingly restored with a modern new wing.

Awful check in
Check in terrible. We were shown to a side room from an empty reception by the concierge and left unsure whether anyone actually knew we had arrived, for 20 minutes before being called forward to check in.
