Friendly, informal bed and breakfast.
Stayed for two nights at The Cottage, along with relatives. We had two ensuite bedrooms in the garden annex (converted out-building) with adjoining door. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Hosts, Ian and Carole, were friendly and accommodating. Rooms were warm and beds comfortable. Ensuite shower rooms were small although shower cubicle was a good size. Very hot radiators in both ensuites. The Cottage is very informal and the owners have a few animals who were no bother to us at all. Had a great breakfast both mornings - fruit juice, cereals and fresh fruit available, full english breakfast freshly prepared along with toast. Hale Village is an interesting little village with couple of pubs and shops, as well as being the home of the giant, John Middleton. Downside for some may be that it is on flight path for Liverpool airport, but planes did not bother us and did not fly in at night. Would definitely recommend, and stay again if need arose.

Shoddy treatment, no room and no apology either
When we arrived at 6pm, we were told in no uncertain terms there had been a double booking and we had no room. No apology was offered. We were told to follow the guy in his car to another B&B about 2 miles away. He told us there had been a mix up and he was only told about it that morning. The B&B we were taken to, luckily, was very nice, and the lady there told us the guy had called about our situation at least 3 days earlier, she had assumed we had been told and were happy about the "switch". We should have been informed of this so we could have made our own decision as to alternative accommodation. As it happened we had no choice in the matter. As I said, luckily the alternative B&B was great and we would highly recommend Tomaria B&B near Widnes

we were greeted by a rather surly landlord, no friendly welcome or introduction, shown up to our family room, not warned that there were no lights on stairways, there were wires coming out of the wall though, first impression of the room was lovely, as was the recently added ensuite, however upon looking properly there were lots of little things awry with the ensuite, the beds were clean and comfortable, three adults in the the room yet only two cups, insufficient toiletries , we were late arriving due to traffic holdups so journey had taken us over 7 hours , we were hungry and asked if there was a chip shop or takeaway nearby, he reluctantly gave us a menu , was more interested in eating his own takeaway while it was hot than helping us , very unhelpful when it came to assisting us with directions of location we had to be at the next morning, we had arranged with him to have breakfast at 7.45 however it was nearer to 8.15 before we were served it , to be honest it felt like we were unwelcome visitors in his house , and just a hindrance to him, we always choose to stay in a family B & B instead of big chain hotel as we have always found them to be friendlier , more personal and welcoming, not so at The Cottage.
