Disappointed
Some staff were very friendly and good, but others were unaccommodating. When I lost my room key-card I was told to "be more careful next time" and I felt I was being told off like a school child! Generally the facilities were not good; no social area where we could meet and relax. Although the room was reasonably clean there was an "old" smell, maybe cigarette smoke or mustiness. One light was not working. The TV had no signal. Window was very difficult to open or close. Room door lock mechanism seemed odd - 3 of us found it difficult to open.

Cheap, clean, no frills but gets the job done
A bit old (I had too much luggage to fit easily through the narrow lift door), and I'm not a fan of single beds, but it was clean, breakfast was decent, and the staff were great. Location is right on the Ruttenscheider, 15 minutes' walk from Messe Essen. They have no car park, but there is open-air parking available on the far side of Alexanderstraße. Wifi is nothing special but works.

No TV for 4 days
I go to Essen every year and this was by far the worst hotel I have stayed in. The TV did not work and despite a response to my check in feedback saying it would be attended to I heard nothing more for the next 4 days. Small room with a poor state of decoration. I will never use this brand of hotel again. One to avoid.

Very basic but met needs
The hotel was very basic with a small reception on the 1st floor and the entrance more like a flat entrance. There was a lot of work going on to refurbish the ground floor with eating places. The rooms were basic but OK and the position of the hotel was close to the main eating/bar area. Overall, OK for the money, but wouldn't want to be there when hot, especially with the ongoing work, as the drilling can disturb so would want the window closed.

Awful option for the price we paid
Please listen to the other reviews!! Do not pay more than $60 per night, we paid wayy too much. We mistakenly thought 3 stars meant something decent and booked it at a very high rate not realizing this was not standard pricing but gouging during a conference taking place in Messe Essen. Our room was on the 5th floor with a city view. The bathroom has not been updated since the 70s and the shower curtain was filthy and didn't drain well. The room not well insulated and quite noisy. The elevator was poorly functional. They only gave us one room key which was not convenient either. It is conveniently located near a U Bahn stop. I do not know why this hotel is listed on Hotels.com

Stay here if you do not find other hotel in Essen
Smelling room. Shower curtain a feet longer, full of dirt. Lift door noise was like horror movie show. Entrance was like entering an old apartment building. This hotel is okay only for short stay if you find no other place to live in. The single room was very small, like student hostel rooms. I believe NOVUM may take away the hotel chain name. Star rating can be two star, but from cleanness single star is enough. At least hotel could make the rating higher, but seems the hotel staff themselves were not knowing how to welcome the customers. Seems they did not smile in decades. The owner of hotel should visit the property before it is too late.
