Clean and fairly quiet giving the location. A good area to get to many attractions quickly. Reasonably priced, however there is a $30 charge on arrival and if you want to use the pool you’ll need a swimming hat.

No frills accommodation being
Great location being on the edge of Central Park, offeeing value for money safe accommodation. Facilities are tired but are clean and serviceable, rooms are small but sufficient as a safe base. This is accommodation catering for travellers who want a safe inexpensive place to stay, the guests are transient so some noise is inevitable. Great gym ans sauna.

Good, but watch out for the membership fee!
Everything was fine. Comfortable bed, great location, the bathroom/showers were fine. Perfect for a cheap stay in a prime location. Only downside is we were told on the website that city tax was included in the price and there’d be no extra fees. There was a $30 membership fee at check in. Not really sure what this was for but it wasn’t signposted anywhere on the listing.

Check in took 45 minutes! Queue went very slowly. Shared shower facilities- don't forget your flip flops. Service not the greatest. Location however is fantastic. Ok for a short stay.

No frills access to a great, friendly city
Fantastic location. But it is what it says on the tin. A Youth hostel. Just possibly in the best location ever.

Poor 2.0
Terrible
Well we lasted one night in this place out of the 6 nights booked, the room was that tiny you couldn’t even get the 2 suitcases in, the window didn’t open, the tv was hanging by a piece of wire and there was no picture, the bunk bed was falling apart and squeaky you didn’t dare turn over. So we checked out after the first night stay and not to mention when checking in the staff were to busy talking about there private life and slagging other staff members well we was stood there and carried ignoring us bearing in mind we jus had a 10 hour day.. never stay there again.

Good rating overall
Rooms were clean and towels changed each day. The a/c was useless, it was one of those that are fixed to the window ( not a remote unit on a wall). Bathrooms were always clean at all times of the day and always had toilet paper despite other reviews. I read reviews before I arrived and read that they charge you $15 per person for the leisure facilities. YMCA actual website had free passes which I downloaded to use. They said I still had to pay $30 as it's for the cleaning facility as well. I didn't like to argue but surely this facility is in your price per night costings anyway just like any hotel stay. We used the baggage storage service which was only $2 per bag for the rest of the day.

Fantastic location. Reception staff so helpful & friendly. Mattress needs replacing - felt like a bicycle with a sheet over it. Room could be spruced up as it looks like a prison cell. Even though it’s a hostel a little bit of brightness could be injected.

West Side YMCA Review - Single Female Traveller
The photo on the website of the single room was exactly as it appeared. The room was comfortable and the hostel was suitable for my 5 nights stay. My room was on the 8th floor, the same floor as the female shower/toilets. The showers & toilets were clean and the water was hot. The two lifts were working throughout my stay at the hostel. Even though there were 3 showers, I never waited to use the showers and always found when using the showers I usually was the only one using a shower cubicle. You are given a security code at check in to access the female shower/toilet area. I used the gym facilities on 3 occasions. I was impressed with the actual gym equipment (which hosted better quality equipment than my regular gym in London!) and size of the gym. As a single female staying in NYC at the hostel, I found the surrounding area safe and busy with people at all time. I went out of state for one night and came back to the hostel just before midnight using public transport and walking to get back to the hostel and felt very safe. I found the hostel easier to get through via Eight Avenue (as it's a straight long road from the Port Authority Bus Terminal). The nearest subway (Columbus Circle) is less than 5 minutes from the hostel and was straight forward to travel to the airport when flying home. There are signs on the platform telling you how to travel to JFK Airport.
