Look Before You Leap
Moved hotels after found first - Maihama - had no bar, 1 ‘restaurant’ & very poor Wi-fi. Booked there & then via Advice: do not prepay. Lost my money on first hotel. But the Okura was top class throughout.

Fabulous hotel for business. Close to the Metro and Akasaka and plenty of ares to have meetings, especially the beautiful Garden Lounge overlooking a stunning Japanese garden. The Garden Tower breakfast room offer views across Tokyo and of Mt Fuji.

Hotel New Otani Tokyo Garden Tower
Fab hotel but food ridiculously expensive
First break to Tokyo & this hotel was great. But eat out as hotel prices are ridiculous particularly as nearer the metro station there's a wide range of excellent restaurants e.g. Even a Swedish restaurant! But of the restaurants we'd recommend the busy (always a very good sign) French one! All a few minutes walk from the hotel & a quarter of the price!

Mixed at best
I'll start with the positive. Room size was great. 290 sq ft for a double room vs. 200 sq ft for comps I found. Another positive is the convenience. It's not in one of the more touristy parts of Tokyo (Akasaka) but it's next to a subway. Also, lots of options for drinking and dining in the hotel. On the negative, it's all about the experience. Some critiques are cultural, which you should know. Don't go to the spa in a hotel'll have to go back and change. But beyond that, I got a massage there and they wanted to charge me an extra $50 to use the sauna or steam room. That pettiness extended to the room service...they wanted to charge me for extra parmesan cheese with my pasta. At breakfast, they didn't want to serve me the buffet that ended at 10 AM when I showed up on time, or even five mins early! A lot of little things like this just left me feeling like the hotel was petty, and trying to squeeze out the last dollar out of their clientele. The final insult was requesting a two hr late check out, and being told that unless I wanted to join the hotel club, it'd be an extra $100. They finally waived that after I aired my list of grievances to the manager. There are others, but I'm focusing on the bigger ones here. In short, good location, big room, old hotel that has many amenities, but such a disappointment in terms of the service experience and feeling like I was getting nickel and dimed constantly, that it's hard to give the hotel a very positive review.
