Hotel is beautiful. Was hoping to try the restaurant but unfortunately was fully booked. Staff behind check in were very friendly and welcoming both check in and check out. I did however email prior to our stay enquiring about upgrade options to be informed there was only family rooms available at £50 extra. There was only 2 of us so no need for a family room. At the time of booking there was only 1 twin room and 1 double room left so we took the twin room and offered our friends the double room. Upon check in we were asked will you be needing the twin room to which i replied there was only one of each room left when booking so we allowed our friends to have the double. I also informed him that we tried to get a paid upgrade but there was nothing left but family rooms. So he checked us into our twin room and we left to let our friends check into their room. I then received a text from my friend saying they had been given a FREE upgrade from their double room to an executive room.. which was completely baffling considering we could have had their double room after all! Apparently when we left the man behind the desk said don't tell your friends but you have a free upgrade. Slightly annoying considering we were willing to pay for an upgrade, and they were given one for free when they already had the double room. So not entirely sure what on earth happened there. Hotel lost money for no reason.

Good, but some aspects can be improved

Generally this is a good hotel. The room was shown as a standard double, but it might not be comfortable as a double. The bed was not particularly large, (not even certain if it is 150 cm wide) and one side was against the wall which is a problem for couples. It would be better to have the wifi password prominently displayed in the rooms, or on the card you are given at check in. Breakfast consisted of a good hot buffet, but the colder items were not on show. I requested some museli and yogurt as an extra, ten minutes later I was told it was just coming - but it never arrived. I think that cereals and yogurt should be shown buffet style as well.

    Ok stay

Ok stay - visited during the bank holiday weekend and was woken at 5am by noisy guests. Due to location you could also hear outside noise from people in the street. Cleanliness was very good in the bathroom but attention to detail was lacking in the wardrobe. No TV remote but another was brought up to the room. Bathroom window - no curtain but just netting - in the evening with the light on, I felt slightly uncomfortable with being seen from the hotel opposite. Very attentive reception staff on check-in.

    ok but there are better.

The hotel is in a great central location but it can be noisy. Reception is understaffed but the staff themselves are polite and helpful. The rooms are refurbished in a tired way. the shower was cold in the evening.

If you want to sleep don’t stay here !!

The rooms are unbearable warm and no fan provided. You either have to sleep in what feels like a sauna all night or have the window open the 3 inch’s that it does open and listen to the extremely loud noise of people on the street. I appreciate that the hotel can not control the noise from the street but when they’re full aware of the temperature in the rooms, you don’t want to be told management are looking into fans. They should have them already. We stayed in room 309 and could hear every movement made in the room next door as well room above. The shower … well if you could call it that. The pressure was nothing more than a drip. The bath was very slippery when in the shower because there wasn’t enough water from the shower to rinse off any shower gel or shampoo that had fallen within the bath where stood. No housekeeping for the 3 nights that we stayed. No bin for rubbish within the room. I paid slightly more for a city view twin room … what a joke that was. Our view was the brick front of the train station and the street below as you couldn’t get your head out of the window as it jammed open at about 3 inches high. When checkin out I was asked by a couple staying on my floor if my room was hot and noisy too. They were also staying with another couple who had the same complaint. No duty manager on shift when leaving, was told I could email complaint to management but asked for a manager to contact me … still waiting !!!

    Satisfactory stay

We stayed at The County Hotel for our mini moon this week. The room and hotel was nice and clean and the food in the restaurant was great. Majority of the staff were lovely and very helpful but some were clearly no interested in their jobs or helping paying customers. Our safe was broken and after chasing the hotel a few times about getting it fixed I gave up trying. I was told by a member or staff “I have stayed in hotels since the 1990s and never had anything stolen so I wouldn’t worry about using the safe”….not very professional in my eyes. We paid extra for a deluxe double city view room-big regret. As much as the room was lovely the noise was unbelievable we had a very unsettled 3 nights sleep whilst staying in the hotel and had to buy a fan for the heat in the room. Overall it was a satisfactory stay but wouldn’t be rushing back.
