Weekend at Great Western hotel , Oban

The young man who checked us in was fantastic, Clear concise very helpful and friendly. Hotel overall is a bit tired and needs updating. Room was spotlessly clean however and very comfortable. Breakfast was good and only a bit slower than we would have expected due to current restrictions, Very good covid procedure.

    An enjoyable three night break.

Although this hotel is in need of an upgrade, it's location is ideal with a short walk into the centre of Oban and the excellent view of Oban Bay. The seaview rooms are well worth the additional cost. The hot water ran out at times(possibly not helped by the leaky shower). Perhaps not the best breakfast we have ever had but it was certainly adequate. The service was efficient and courteous.

Rear location, shame about the rooms

Great location and very grand looking hotel. However the rooms were overpriced and very dated. Quite depressing rooms really overlooking a run down area at the rear of the hotel. For example the tv antenna was passed through the window opening and promptly fell out when the window was opened. That possibility sums the quality of the room that I stayed in.

hotel with climat but staff undertrained

two rooms booked - one received was a clean upgraded room, another old and tired - that itself was pretty poor. Booking two rooms and paying the same money zi expect them of the same standard. second night woke up by water dripping directly to the bed. When went downstairs to the reception had to practically told the guy there to go and check what's going on in the room above mine. Lad was in panic because how can he interrupt a guest at midnight - well I was interrupted by water dripping right at me so I don't care about guest who did that. Ohh yeah, he put the water on to the bath tub and fell asleep on a bed. When I communicated with the Operations Director about two rooms of two different standard, rather than offering me an upgrade he offered to show me the better room. Seriously, so funny. Pity as the hotel is beautifully located and taking its age, it crrtainly has a character, unfortunately the staff fail on every corner. Find it bizzare taking it's a part if an international brand, so the training should be on a certain level. Overall lovely stay in Oban, besides the time spent in the hotel and that's due to its terrible staff. Hotel's manager should definitely act there.

    Short break

Stayed at the Great Western hotel for 3 nights Monday to Thursday. My daughter and I were so happy when we saw our room (213). The views out over the bay were awesome. Nice clean twin beds and tea and coffee making facilities. All the staff we met were very friendly and efficient and we felt so welcomed. We had a bit of difficulty with the shower and the housekeeper came immediately- it was something to do with the water pressure and although it was a drawback nothing was going to prevent us enjoying our stay. The breakfast was very good and the service efficient. I found the dining room very depressing though, dark and dreary something that hopefully can be improved. The choice of music was dire, some sort of pop rubbish. Tourists are not looking for 🎵heedurum Hodurum bad Scottish tak the floor type stuff but there is plenty of good quality Scottish music to be had. Please don’t subject your guests to pop music. Show them a touch of class. We found lots to do during our stay and can recommend a visit to Ganavan sands it’s just lovely out there. We also did a very lovely drive of 18 miles to Loch Melfort hotel and Gardens (national trust). It was stunning. A lovely lunch out on the decking with the most fantastic views. You will not be disappointed. In this difficult time of COVID it was so good to do a wee break in our beautiful Scotland and I would highly recommended a trip to the Oban area there is so much to see and the sea air 😀

Overall the property was great. Excellent bed, staff great. The only issue was the hot water!! Fantastic water pressure for cold water but just a trickle for the hot. Only stayed one day so didnt worry us too much but would not be enough to wash your hair if anyone is staying extended time.
