Nice hotel but noisy and popular with youth groups
We paid a 'pretty penny' for the George Washington Suite, which was big, clean and had everything we required. Sadly, the hotel designers decided to place the most expensive suite in a 350 room hotel NEXT DOOR to the two youth-hostel rooms (the only rooms with bunkbeds on the entire 17th floor) and opposite the stairs. It's utter madness, which meant that every single night we had noise, which woke our baby and made each night a complete nightmare living in fear of the next kid playing soccer with a water bottle in the hallway with loud music and shouting. I hope the hotel designers lose their contract and get banned from designing any more hotels for life - idiots. Fortunately the hotel manager (Lewis) handled upon the third night of complaining and we were compensated reasonably, in addition to the hotel being extremely apologetic. Nonetheless, it's only fair that other travellers are warned that this hotel is very popular with huge groups of younger international tourists (youth groups, scouts and alike). It is very clean and the service is excellent (and friendly), not to mention the best WiFi I have ever enjoyed in a hotel, but if you are looking for calm respite from the busy city or have kids/baby - this is not the hotel for you. I would however stay with friends, especially for the rooftop bar and excellent location.

Exceptional 10.0
I loved the Freehand! Just walking into the hotel was an experience. It was very hip yet nostalgic, and definitely very artsy. The person greeting at the door was extremely friendly and very attentive to us in helping with out luggage to taking the time to welcoming us. The host at the front desk was very kind and helpful with answering all my questions. All of the housekeeping staff was also very nice and welcoming. I had two other people with me and we went with the 2 bunk beds... the room far exceeded my expectations, it was bigger than i though it was going to be. The beds were clean and extremely comfortable. We had a flatscreen tv and fridge which was perfect to keep a few drinks cold. The shower was amazing, it had the right amount of pressure and warmth... it reminded me of a little spa/suana room. The Freehand is connected to the cutest little shop called Smile To Go... food and coffee was delicious. The staff there was also so kind and helpful with my questions about vegan options. I didnt get to go to the two other restaurants the freehand has or the G.W. Bar but I did go to the broken shaker which also had the cutest decorations. Overall if you are looking immerse yourself in a hip artsy hotel, freehand is a great place to get that vibe. Last thing, great choice in elevator music! Loved that they had clssic hip hop paying! I am definitely booking my next NYC trip at Freehand!

Two nights in a closet
We took the train to NYC and walked a mile to the hotel, so we were tired and ready to get into the room. We arrived at 2:45. We were told the room wasn’t ready, so we waited until 3:00 p.m. The room still wasn’t ready, so we killed some more time and went back to the front desk at 3:30. The room still wasn’t ready. We were finally able to get into our room after 4:30 pm. It was much smaller than shown on the website when I chose it. There were three of us. Yet, there were only two bathrobes and no slippers. The bathroom was the size of a closet. The rest of the room, with two bunk beds, was tight for us. There wasn’t even room for an ice bucket. By the way, no ice on the floors. Four people would not have been able to stay there, especially if they had luggage. For the inconvenience of not being able to get into the room, the manager waved the resort fee and gave us breakfast vouchers. That didn’t help the room situation. It was just too small. On the positive side, the hotel is safe. It is close to many attractions, and if you need a cab they have a very good service they use.

Funky New York hotel
Funky, cool, arty and with a decidedly ‘happening’ feel, this hotel may not be for faint-hearted traditionals, but we thought it was fabulous. We stayed five days and prior to arrival were given an upgrade from ‘threes company’ to two king rooms. Don’t be put off by the dark narrow landings, the design energy has rightly been put elsewhere. The rooms - decorated in a preppy style with original artwork - are roomy enough, with some lovely personal touches like fresh apples, the beds were amazingly comfortable, and the shower produced an endless power of piping water. We were just outside the lifts on the 3rd floor but beyond the usual sounds of a bustling city we didn’t find it particularly noisy. Couple of lightbulbs went during our stay which were immediately dealt with. The main stairs, lobby and lounge areas are sensationally decorated and a great place to sit with a beer and people-watch before having a tasty (and well-priced) meal in the Moroccan bar/restaurant on the 1st floor. The Freehand has the feel of a ‘young’ hotel in all senses of the word - there are numerous charming red-shirted young men floating about in the public areas ready to lend a hand, chat, or crack a joke with you, and the restaurant service was faultless. Along with the funky music that continuously plays in the lobby area comes the sense - particularly in the evenings - of a hotel where the grownup staff have gone home, leaving the beautiful young things in charge. And all the better for it!

Very good 8.0
Handy location / cool look / few frustrations
We stayed for five nights in NY at the Freehand. The location is very handy for getting all over NY but not the coolest location. If I went back I would try and stay more lower Manhattan area. The hotel was nice and clean and has a cool look to it however a few things were a little annoying- the bathroom is tiny which is fine but there is not much of a shelf to put your own toiletries on so by the time you put you things in there it’s a bit of a mess! Could be solved with one or two extra shelves! Also no tea or coffee facilities in the rooms. On the info card it said we could request a nespresso machine but when we did they said they had none left. You couldn’t then get a hot drink from Downstairs until 8am. We were up early a lot and found this frustrating esp as one of us caught a bit of a sore throat when away and a hot drink would have helped a bit. The cafe and bars attached to the hotel are all pretty cool but the upstairs roof terrace bar is popular with the general public and therefore rammed! We tried to get a drink but it was way too busy.
