Peaceful retreat
Really enjoyed our stay at Three Shires, fabulous walking on the doorstep. Our room was very comfortable and clean but (Please put a mirror near to a plug) !! Food was really good the steaks exceptional. We will be back.

Hotel was very clean and comfortable and staff were very attentive. The slight disappointment was food service and quality. The fish used for the battered fish was pretty tasteless and to serve half a mushroom, half a tomato and two onion rings with a sirloin steak which with a sauce was costing £25 seemed parsimonious - the chips were good though!. A bit more thought needs to be given here. Otherwise a hake dish and the cheese board were very good. The TV in the room was also on the small side although you don't stay here to watch TV..

Disappointment at value for money
The Three Shires is a pretty building adorned with lovely hanging baskets, however as a b&b it is overpriced for the size of the room and the size and quality of the breakfast offering. I believe the price is based on location, however there are much nicer places for less money in the area. Our room was ok, but the plumbing was not. I kid you not it was like a full blown symphony at times and from around 6.30am, I guess when people start to get up, it was just so loud and relentless you couldn’t go back to sleep. I don’t know if that was just our room or not. We were also asked for full payment on arrival. In all the b&b breaks we have taken, unless we paid last minute for a booking, we have never been asked for full payment 10 mins after arrival. We actually felt quite insulted, it felt like we weren’t trusted. The breakfast is ok but just that, the cold buffet style items were not great, and as for the toast! I witnessed a guest being basically told to leave the temp dial alone. I think the guest had assumed the amount of time the toast was taking it needed turning higher. Which leads me to the weird vibe from the lady in charge of breakfast who I believe is one of the owners. Brusque is the word that comes to mind, you felt intimidated about asking for anything. I wanted brown sauce but it wasn’t offered and I felt totally disinclined to ask. There was just no warmth at all. The evening meal menu was good, no complaints with that.

On the road to Wrynose Pass
Stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed the experience. Room was good with all the usual facilities including free wifi / tv / radio / tea/coffee/biscuits. Only ate there one evening due to other commitments but really enjoyed the meal. Breakfast was lovely with a good choice of cooked food + cereals. We would recommend the hotel without hesitation. Only point worth mentioning is the hotel road continues onto the Wrynose pass, be careful if your SatNav takes you out that way, it's not for the faint hearted!

A little gem
Stayed for 2 nights. Scenic location and great for walking, with a good selection of long and short walks from the premises and lots more within a short drive. Our room was very comfortable, not large but spacious enough, well equipped and had a bath/shower, very welcome after a long walk. The English breakfast was very good, and so were the lunch and 2 dinners from the restaurant and bar menus. Rounded off with a fine selection of local beers - all we tried were very good including the unusual local wheat beer - and some nice wines. Nothing much to criticise - our room could have done with thicker curtains for the bright mornings during our stay that's about it.
