Exceptional 10.0
It was fun to stay above an old English pub. Location was perfect: short walk from train station, close to the Great Hall and an easy walk to downtown and the cathedral. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Just be prepared for lack of air conditioning and steep stairs up to your room!

Great local pub with rooms.
This is a great little pub with rooms above and close to everything you need in Winchester. However, I do feel they need to be a bit more attentive to their residents as I just felt more staff needed to be on hand to manage general residents needs, reception area and most especially the breakfast service, which was slow and basically understaffed with only one person dealing with breakfast guests and checking out. They can't be in two places at once and I didn't have the time to order a cooked breakfast because there was no one around to take my order and the other guests, who had to chase their breakfasts up seemed to be waiting an awful long time. If the pub is full with residential guests, then I just feel more staff both front of house and behind the scenes (in the kitchens is needed). But generally, it was a great good value stay for Winchester. These tiny improvements will take it to the next level.

Pleasant place for an overnight stay
Check-in was easy and friendly. Room and bathroom were of a good size and overall nicely decorated with a bit of character. The bed was comfortable. Unfortunately it was a hot night so we had to leave the fan running all night which detracted from our sleep but at least we had a fan. The shelf in the bathroom was at a downward angle which made it difficult to put things on and there was a bit of dust in areas. I think we were the only guests there that night and in the morning service for breakfast was a bit slow. It might be an idea to provide some tea bags, hot water jugs and coffee jugs so people don't have to wait. I had the smashed avocado and poached egg which was delicious. The place is on a quite busy intersection so there is some traffic noise. It is well located for local bars, restaurants and attractions.

Sent a random guest to my room and unclean
Wouldn't recommend. General condition is unclean, see odd stain on bedspread... guess what that is (unacceptable at £114 a night). Corridors also generally unclean and the back exit is left on the latch repeatedly compromising security. Tipped over the edge by the staff sending a random guest to knock on my door at 10:45pm to ask for an iron because it was in my room and they didn't have enough irons... Really? Not very apologetic either despite waking me up. Top tips to the GM: Buy more irons... you're charging the rate to accommodate this. Don't send random guests to other guests bedrooms in the night. Surely hotel management 101.

Great location
Pros: I liked the fact that the hotel was very rustic style and cosy. The breakfast was absolutely delicious, I would highly recommend the veggie breakfast option. The staff were lovely and caring, and were very attentive. The bed was very comfortable, the towels thick and the bathroom very clean. Cons: I disliked that there were stains on the carpets in the room (they could clean them frequently) and scuffs on the walls, but we were not in the hotel much so we were not massively bothered by it. I wish they gave us robes too. Also not very sound proof, the building is grade 2 listed so cannot complain too much.
