Top Places to Stay in Leeds - From City Center Townhouses to Business Hotels

Hotel search

Although it's the third biggest British city, Leeds is compact. Many modern hotels cluster within a few blocks of the city centre. Most hotels in Leeds appeal to business travellers as well as leisure visitors, and you'll find small boutique hotels for a romantic weekend. You can find more places to stay in outlying suburbs within easy reach of the airport, as well as in nearby Bradford.

Leeds city centre

Leisure travellers like to stay in the city centre, where they can step straight from their hotel into streets full of shops, restaurants, and nightlife venues. Malls and Victorian shopping arcades cluster on streets like Briggate and around Kirkgate Market. You'll find palaces of culture like Leeds City Museum and Leeds Art Gallery in the centre of town too.

Large hotels managed by major chains in central Leeds provide services and facilities demanded by business travellers. At weekends, many lure vacationers with cheaper rates. You'll also find no-frills and budget hotels in the city centre, as well as apartments and suites with cooking facilities.

Leeds waterfront

Leeds' waterfront area, beside the River Aire and the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, attracts visitors who want to stay next door to cafés, bars with terraces, and restaurants. Call Lane, connecting the riverside with the city centre, is lined with stylish eateries and cocktail bars. This part of town is handy too for those arriving by train, as it's only a few short blocks from the station.

You'll find trendy boutique hotels on streets like Swinegate and The Calls, running parallel to the River Aire, and at Granary Wharf, a canalside enclave full of places to eat and drink. Across the river, a 5-minute walk, there are no-frills places to stay close to one of Leeds' top attractions, the Royal Armouries Museum.

Near Leeds Bradford Airport

Cricket and rugby fans who want to be close to sporting action can stay at hotels around Otley Road, near Headingley Carnegie Stadium. This huge modern venue is the home ground of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Leeds Rhinos rugby league club, and Leeds Carnegie rugby union club. The Headingley area is roughly midway between the city and Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA), so it's handy for those who prefer a short trip to the terminal.

Business travellers as well as sports followers will find hotels to suit them in the Headingley area. Headingley is a university enclave, so accommodation here is geared to visiting academics. You'll also find hotels with meetings facilities in this part of town.

Bradford

Less than 7 miles from Leeds, Bradford offers visitors an alternative to staying in its bigger neighbour. Bus and metro links make it easy to visit the attractions of Leeds. Bradford has its own attractions, too, like the National Media Museum, dedicated to film and video. Saltaire, a couple of miles north of Bradford, is a 19th-century industrial village that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it's easy to visit by bus or train.

Staying in Bradford can be cheaper than opting for a hotel in Leeds. You'll find large hotels in Bradford's city centre, and smaller hotels and guesthouses in its suburbs.

Leeds countryside

Leeds and Bradford are part of one of Britain's biggest urban areas. But the Yorkshire countryside is not far away - the moors and valleys of Yorkshire Dales National Park begin around 20 miles from the cities. Closer to town, you'll find accommodation in small market towns and villages not far from Leeds Bradford International Airport.

Less than an hour's drive from central Leeds, you'll find country club hotels with facilities like spas, swimming pools, and golf courses. Guesthouses, bed-and-breakfasts, and small inns can be found in rural villages. Farm cottage accommodation is another countryside choice.
