About this cottage

All surfaces are disinfected between guests.

Step back in time to an old-fashioned beach cottage where the screen door slams. Lighthouse Cottage is in the shadow of the Tybee Island Lighthouse, which is just 1.5 blocks away. The beach also is just 1.5 blocks away. Leave your window open at night, turn on your ceiling fan, and sleep to the soft rush of the surf. In the heart of the former Fort Screven, this 3-bedroom cottage was built in 1920 by the US Army to house non-commissioned officers. Just a block away is Battery Garland and the Fort Screven museum. This is the islands quiet, secluded north end preferred by celebrities. The army built the houses facing each other with a sidewalk between --- no street, just a sidewalk. The streets run behind the houses. The front of Lighthouse Cottage faces a sidewalk; the back is on a traffic-free street. The original clawfoot bathtub and the original enamel kitchen sink/cabinet have been newly restored. Most of the interior walls are 5-inch wide tongue and groove planks laid horizontally. These were discovered and restored when 1/4-inch paneling was removed. The master bedroom has a queen bed and an en suite bath with double shower. No shower curtain or door needed. Also in the master bedroom is an alcove containing a daybed with a twin-size mattress. Underneath the daybed is another twin bed that pulls out.

Tybee Island's North Beach: Great dolphin viewing --- virtually guaranteed on the north end of the island. Dolphin boat tours are always available, but sitting on the north beach is just as effective. We once watched a band of dolphins frolicking with a delighted kayaker. Tybee's beaches are equipped with porch swings that seem to be about 100 yards apart. From the north beach swings you can watch the sun set over Savannah and the mouth of the Savannah river --- incredible sunsets. Savannah, being 15 miles away, is too far away to actually see but you can see the fireworks on July 4th and New Year's Eve. Shrimp boats with their nets spread like wings are always in view.

The 2 Lighthouses: Two lighthouses less than 3 miles apart but so radically different in character. As you approach Tybee Island, you see the impressive Tybee Light in the distance. Tall, dark, and handsome with a white cumberbund. He was honored a few years ago when he got his own US postage stamp. ( In lighthouse circles that is akin to an Oscar.) But then as you cross the Lazaretto bridge onto Tybee Island, you look down to the left and blink. Is that a lighthouse in the water? Indeed it is. That's plucky little Cockspur Lighthouse. Weathered, plain white masonry. Not flashy at all, except ... At every high tide Cockspur stands in the ocean well off-shore. Only at low tide does the stony spur appear that supports the little lighthouse. A firm foundation after all.

Lost in the 40's/50's: So far the quaint shopping district near the pier has pretty much escaped the wrecking ball. Witness Arby's --- Tybee Island's only fast food restaurant. This is what Arby's looked like when they began in the early 60's. As for shopping, no Sak's here. We're talking beach shopping: T-shirts, souvenirs, Sno-Cones, umbrella drinks, seafood. But remember, for culture and serious shopping, there is colorful, historic Savannah, just 20 minutes away. Recommended reading: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, an amusing look at Savannah's high- and low-life (about 2 years on the NY

Times nonfiction best seller list).

    Quick trip to the beach

This was a great place to stay with out two little dogs and kids. The whole place is linoleum floors, so I was never worried about the messes kids and pups can make. It was easy access to the beach and to the boardwalk on Tybee Beach. However, it would have been nice to have some instructions on how to locate those places in the host book for the Lighthouse Cottage. We were not at all familiar with Tybee Island so we didn't know which way to head to the beach or restaurants. We will know next time!

Disappointed. Next time we’ll read more carefully.

The description read “Lighthouse Cottage: modernized but the memories are preserved.” Modernization can mean a lot of things. There are showers and flush toilets, after all. It continues with, “Step back in time to an old-fashioned beach cottage where the screen door slams.” except there is no screen door to the patio. It goes on to read, “The original clawfoot bathtub and the original enamel kitchen sink/cabinet have been newly restored.” I guess restored means they have new fixtures. No argument with the last comment on the cottage. “Most of the interior walls are 5-inch wide tongue and groove planks laid horizontally. These were discovered and restored when 1/4-inch paneling was removed.” The photos of the cottage were obviously taken some time ago. The patio looks inviting, but the canopy and furniture are weathered, soiled and crusty. A January 2020 reviewer noted that the living room furniture is limited and uncomfortable and the master bathroom shower is lovely to look at but SLICK and the floor stays wet. We agree. There should be a floor mat and a safety rail. To top it off the cool lights in the kitchen area had a note attached stating that they were not working because of a “short”. Also, there were no window blinds in one bedroom. Not good if you are trying to sleep in. We learned a valuable lesson about choosing a rental with VRBO. When the majority of the description features the surrounding amenities and says very little about the property, beware. For the price we didn’t expect the Taj Mahal, but we expected better than this.

    Happy

We were only here for a day but everything was great. My kids loved the history behind the house. Beach and lighthouse were close and the food on the island was great. Only complaint was mosquitos, which has nothing to do with the rental, but the time of year. Would highly recommend.

    Tybee Charming and quiet

What we love about this property: A great location and neighborhood, good value for the money, a central heat and A/C, that works! (we stayed for 9 weeks in the winter), great washer and dryer (commercial grade), an honorable owner, who responded quickly to the few concerns we had during our stay (wind storm took down a tree limb and couldn't figure out the direct TV) Although the cottage could use some new furniture (beds), bathroom upgrade and a couple of smoke detectors. We really had no complaints. Like I mentioned Ted Walker is an honest and honorable owner and will respond quickly if you give him a call. He has a handyman conveniently on the island, should you need anything, and I know from past experience Ted will make things right if your not happy.

    Very pleasant!

The cottage is very comfortable and had all the conveniences we could want. It is definitely showing it’s age and could use some minor repairs on the backside. A protruding beam on the deck was a safety hazard..I tripped over it twice before we got smart and covered it with a chair. The deck is wonderful!

    Lovely stay

We had a very nice stay the facilities were all very nice, comfortable and clean. The location was fantastic, very short walk to beach. The grill in the listing was a picture of a gas grill, however, when we got there all there was was a charcoal grill. We had to make an additional trip to the store for charcoal because none was provided.

    Our favorite place on Tybee!

This is the second time we have stayed in this house, but it will certainly not be the last! The house is so cute and comfortable and such an easy walk to the beach. The neighborhood is quiet, and the house was well stocked. We loved enjoying the breeze on the back deck, and the fenced-in yard was perfect for our beagle. Thank you, Ted, for another great trip!
