I don’t think the Imperial Hotel has had a makeover since the demise of Empire, but - the room was clean, the bed comfy, the staff were lovely, and we had a cooked breakfast - all for £75. Excellent value for a one-night stopover.

Tired hotel poor decor and poor matress on the bed though clean sheets and pillows. Bed base was dirty . Carpets in toilet was stained. No bath mats in shower/ bath so never used it but water flow was terrible. Breakfast was good and breakfast staff were nice. Would not choose to stay again.

Friendly helpful staff. Good breakfast. Property is a pub and as such can get some noise from the revellers.

8/10 Very good

My friend and I spent Wednesday night there, and received a VERY friendly welcome from a nice lady at the reception desk. Unfortunately, there are no lifts and the stairs are rather steep and spiral too, which as two elderly men with walking sticks we found quite hazardous with our luggage. When we got to our room, which was on the first floor, the light in the shower room and loo was broken, resulting in complete darkness with the door shut. I went back and spoke to the lady who had welcomed us and her surprise at the light not working seemed 100% genuine and she apologised profusely and said she would "get it fixed". Then she very quickly and efficiently got us moved to another room, also on the first floor, which was absolutely perfect. I would recommend this hotel for its cleanliness and friendliness but disabled people need to be aware of the stairs.

Although the hotel is dated I have stayed before so knew what to expect. It’s very central to Castle Douglas & that is the main reason I stayed there!

Friendly welcome and a pleasant stay

Warm welcome from David who showed me to my room. A large double room; basic and quite dated, but clean and safe which as a solo female traveller is important to me. I had a full Scottish breakfast which was huge and really set me up for the day. The service staff were attentive and friendly. For what I paid, I really can’t complain about the hotel and I had a pleasant overnight stay there.

Very accommodating and made to feel very welcome - the room had everything you would need for a 1 night stay - decor very dated in need of a bit of paint - had a great shower - en-suite dated but spacious - bedding was clean and crisp - bed was hard so not for us but could suit someone else. Cheap and cheerful - breakfast was great - very friendly all round

It’s a 200 plus year old listed building so a little old fashioned and quirky. I was initially in room 9 but Patricia the owner moved me to room 1 because when the bar is busy at weekends room 9 is pretty noisy until 1130 or so. Room 1is very peaceful. Excellent food at the Olive Retreat 5 minutes walk away. Everything you need is close at hand. The staff are delightful. If I find myself in the area I would return.

Weekend off

We were greeted with a friendly smile from Heather. Made to feel welcome instantly. Staff were lovely. Bedroom was clean and the bed comfy. Yes there's room for an update of the bathroom but it all works. Breakfast was good and a friendly smile and welcome each morning from Martin. Hotel bar was good with banter from the locals. Thank you

It was a nice little room for our stay. Friendly people who gave us good information, however a few things that could be deal-breakers: - No sockets next to the beds. - The bathroom tap would drip all night and the water from it was always freezing cold, the flush on the toilet felt too weak to do anything. - The doors were very loud&creaky, trying to leave the room quietly is impossible. - Karaoke downstairs went on until gone midnight 2x days. We could hear a drunk guy banging on the table downstairs from our room and anyone talking outside, cars etc. If you don’t mind these things then it was great!

2/10 Poor

It is with a very heavy heart that I must leave a poor review of this hotel. The staff are lovely and the breakfast is great but I'm afraid the standard of accommodation is unsatisfactory! No hot water for three days! Boiled kettle to heat bath water! Bed has left me with shoulder and neck pain! The bed frame is burst, with wood and stuffing exposed and I felt the bed was sloped! The window had a gap and failed to close properly which made the room more noisy. ( busy road which is no fault of hotel). The Saturday night karaoke is horrendous which again Saturday night entertainment is unavoidable in most establishments! Dirty hand prints on wall and torn duvet! I didn't check the bed further as I didn't want to know! This is budget but standards must improve as it does not reflect the lovely personalities of the owners and staff! You deserve better! Please, please give your treasure a bit more attention.

Very tired property, probably reasonable value for money for Scotland but compared to most of UK it's quite overpriced for what you get. On the plus side, the bed was clean, the shower worked fine, and the breakfast was good.

A convenient place to stay in the high street, a clean bed, a wonderful breakfast, friendly staff, good value. The building itself is old with some quirky features but I would definitely stay there again.

Highly Recommended

Lovely find in Castle Douglas. The staff were friendly and helpful. The locals were friendly too. Bar was well stocked. Room was clean and large with everything you need in it. Easy to come and go as you please. Breakfast (and the service) was 10/10. Plenty of parking at the rear. Can't recommend enough.
