Location and ambience were great and the room was spacious.
However, the most important thing about a hotel is the bed. Even after we fixed the bed (see below) the mattress sagged and was strangely short, about 4 inches/10 cm shorter than is standard. In addition the lighting in the room was dim even by French standards and there were odd smells (sewer, mustiness, oil paint) that came and went. The bathroom was spotless but the kitchen was dirty, especially the floor.
When we went to bed the first night, we realized there was a crater on one side of the bed. As there is no on site staff, we had to wait around the next day until someone showed up to check in a guest. They didn’t check our bed to see what the problem was and wanted €50 for us to move to a different room. Obviously they figured we were complaining about the saggy mattress not a “real” problem. When packing up to move rooms we looked under the bed to make sure nothing had fallen under it, and noticed the slats had come off the railing. So we dragged the mattress off and fixed it. No apology or recognition of our inconvenience.
Not hell on earth but we would not stay here again. There is no shortage of options in Arles.
