"The Grand Oriental is a wonderful building. Unfortunately it has been unsympatheticly renovated many years ago and is tired and worn which maked it difficult for staff to keep it clean.
On the plus side its $1.50 $AUS tuk tuk ride any nunber of great places.
It's got a great dinnig room, open all day
And the staff are terrifically helpful
And it was only $35 aus a night.
I arrived at 1.30 am and it was a bit of a shock but after 4 nights I'd stay there again "

"The hotel looks opulent on the ground floor. The pool, gym and breakfast are top notch. The food in the Indian restaurant was bland and the room was a bit dirty on check-in, especially the bathroom floor. Rooms are a bit shabby but come with plenty of free water. "

"This is a decent hotel but not excellent I would say. Looks old and needs lot of attention to finer aspects of the rooms and building. Location is certainly very good if you have a lake view room. Pool is also good and large. Food is average with very less sitting space as compared to the room accommodation ( I had my B/F standing all the time ). I had to call for proper toilet kits all the time... Over all not very bad but not very good as well... to stay if you get a good price deal. "

It was a nice way to see a bit of Colombo. The rooms were comfortable and staff were fantastic. The rooftop pool and hot tubs were beautiful especially at sunset. "
