Staff was incredible. Very helpful and friendly. The location is beautiful but the decor a little outdated. The room was very smokey but ok once we opened the window to air it out. The food was EXCELLENT. The outdoor onsen was my fave. I would stay here again despite the smokey room - just make sure you request a non-smoking room!

Absolutely amazing!
Ok, so when I booked I must have been rushed and just thought it was expensive. Turns out I got the dinner and breakfast option and was so glad I did. The 9-course dinner will leave you wanting it to never end and yet unable to eat much more.
The property has three private Onsen (hot-springs) which makes things just so much more convenient. And the town itself is lovely.
There are direct (and slow) local buses from nearby and from Osaka and Kyoto. Watch luggage on local buses as there is no storage other than your lap.
I highly recommend this town and hotel

Serenity in one spot
Stayed overnight to try out the full ryokan experience. The place is quite wonderful. All three onsens were extremely relaxing, the scenary was eye catching and the staff were quite helpful. The dinner and breakfast were best food experiences I've ever had. The gentleman that personally checked in me in and the waitress spoke English so I never felt left out. I just wished I stayed another night.

Traditional Japanese Hotel at a popular Hot Spring
This was our first time at a Ryokan and an Onsen. We arrived at Shin-Kobe station and took the subway to Tanigami, changed there for a train to Arimaguchi, then changed again for a train which shuttles between Arimaguchi and Arima Onsen. The transfer from Shin-Kobe was accomplished with a single ticket for ¥720.
The 12 tatami mat Japanese style room was used for breakfast, dinner and sleeping. We had a maid which served our meals and reconfigured the room as required for eating or sleeping. The same maid looked after us for the entire duration of our stay.

hot spring baths in Arima
Great place with friendly helpful staff. Not a lot of English spoken but that's okay. Close to Arima's waterfall and ropeway. Nice hotspring baths including an outdoor bath. Wonderful food and drink - try the Suzune sparkling sake, it matches well with the food.

First Japanese Hot Spring Experience
I had previously visited hot springs in Taiwan, and was excited to visit the oldest springs in Japan. While the staff was very attentive, friendly and proficient enough in English, I found the rooms and hot spring spa areas themselves to be less modern than I had expected based on the price and experience in Taiwan. The surrounding mountains are beautiful, but the town itself has relatively few options for shops or restaurants. Perhaps I inappropriately expected a more westernized experience, but as a westerners, I would favor Taiwan for the value and luxury.

First Hotspring
Wow they must not get anyone foreign that often here. Definitely a language barrier, not something I would expect from a hotel rated this highly. I would recommend having some good basic knowledge of hot springs in japan along with overall conversation basics. The place is a bit dated (80's) and showed a little wear in the western room they placed me in. Room was a nice size and the fridge had beer and drinks which were a tad bit more expensive . If you get the meals included its well worth it. I felt like dinner was never going to end. The staff is definitely nice despite the slight language barrier. I was surprised that they didn't mention to me the theme'd rooms for hot spring as I read in their book. and the water wasn't as hot as I had heard it can be in other establishments (nice for those that don't like that). I was sad that they closed the bar a bit early but for being mid week stay I was not surprised. The price is a bit more than I would pay to stay again but considering dinner and breakfast those meals did not disappoint me
