Room was large, receptionists were helpful in booking restaurants for us. Well located, next to castle and garden and walkable to omicho market and geisha district.
Hotel however looks a bit dated. The onsen facilities whilst adequate needs to be refresh, very worn out.

Great hotel, perfect location
The hotel was terrific, perfectly situated near the castle, gardens, Samurai district and Geisha / Geiko district. The staff was so helpful with making reservations for dinner, getting taxi, etc. Breakfast had wide variety too.

This hotel has a very 'old world' style which is lovely. Unfortunately, this extends to the WiFi which was very slow (1.5Mbps). The hot spring bath is lovely though I wasn't too happy about having a female attendant who entered the male change room several times.
Getting to the hotel from the train is best done by taxi. When I arrived in the evening there were no dining options because apparently the hotel restaurant was full, and all the local restaurants were either closed or full. Ended up having a konbini dinner.
The hotel is handy for the castle and gardens.

The hotel is close to the Kenroukuen Garden. It takes 15 min to walk there from the hotel. The hotel has a nice lobby and friendly staff who speak adequate English. They even have live piano performance for 30 min in evenings, although yo be seated you have to pay $5 cover charge. The hotel has a small but genuine hot spring pool, guests can use it without additional charge. My room was clean and quiet, and the bed comfortable. Breakfast was fine for me. The words of caution for some people are (1) the carpet in the room seems worn and the corridor seem dim; (2) I could not get a seat in 3 restaurants within walking distance of the hotel because they have all been fully booked on a Sunday night.

Stay was great. The room stayed warm. I do feel other hotels have better AC. But the inside had a cool old school vibe and they give you an actual key to your door.

The hotel is right next to one of Japan’s most amazing gardens and within 1.5 miles of all local attractions. It’s a charming place with its own mineral hot spring. The staff was terrific. The breakfast buffet had plenty of local dishes. We loved it and would stay again.
