We’ve stayed here many times and it’s always great. Even the restrictions didn’t really impact on our visit.

Love it
We love the Blue Lion. Location, building, staff....all brilliant. There are some minor things which could do with tweaking: soundproofing of rooms (18th century floorboards!!), opening up the lovely garden at the back for its pub, revising of its OTT priced wine list.

One of my favourite places to stay
Standard double was not very big - for reference we stayed in the hotel du vin at York the previous week and the standard was super big. It was clean but we stayed for two nights and the room wasn't refreshed or made up on day two which was unexpected and disappointing. On the plus side the staff were incredibly friendly and the food and drinks were exceptional. I've been coming to this gem of a hotel / gastro pub since 1992 and it is one of my favourite places to be. The village is very pretty and the walks from the hotel take in some breathtaking scenery. Just to add the hotel is dog friendly and usually (not this time) includes doggie treats in your room.

Really really unpleasant proprietress, rude and unwelcoming. Probably best to avoid, shame as it is a nice place and the rest of the staff were pleasant.

Enjoyable stay, but pricey wine
Lovely pub devoted to food. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The room we had was large with a very comfortable bed, and plenty of room for our dogs crate to go in. We like the Blue Lion, but the wine prices starting at £27.50 for us were very expensive. The food usually excellent was quite expensive and both our dishes were dry. They did have a big party in but for price,we were disappointed. Still love the place however, and sure this was just a blip.

2 night stay
Stayed 2 nights with courtyard accommodation that we could not fault. Roomy, modern, clearance and wonderfully quiet. Breakfasts were lovely with lots of choice. Staff helpful. Only downside was on arrival we booked an evening meal in the restaurant but when we went to find our table at the allotted time we were told to eat in the bar area as the dining room was being used for a private function. This was not mentioned to us at the time of booking. We were taken to a table near the bar area which was crowded and noisy. Although the food we had was exceptionally tasty it was spoilt by the fact we had people stood over us who were very loud. Because of this we only had the one course and left.

Disappointing
Returning after 16 years as used to stop every year on route to France with my late partner. Rooms in need of love an attention, large spider crack in sink, plug hole dirty, and bed not comfortable. My elderly parents were unable to shower, as shower over bath, and they could not safely get in and out of the bath. Also bed very high for them, so they had to climb in. Booked for dinner, but felt like just shoved in a table rather than other guests being politely shown to their tables. Food was not as good as it used to be, and a bit cold. Now a bit overpriced for what you are getting. Certainly not the hustle and bustle around the place as there used to be. Disappointed start to holiday and sadly not sure we will be returning.

Great Stay, lovely people
This place has a wonderful reputation that over the years has continued to be extremely high, I'm happy to say that this is justified. Lovely staff, warm welcoming and ready to go that extra distance to make your stay perfect. My only slight negative comment would be that the decor in some rooms is in need of some attention. The restaurant and room that we stayed in would really benefit from a lick of paint and a touch up here and there. It's nothing serious and did not spoil are stay, but it could do with a "spruce up"

Perfect location, great food and staff
We have eaten at the Blue Lion on a number of occasions and always found the food to be excellent, the bar to be comfortable and interesting and the staff helpful and friendly. We no longer in the area and chose a two night stay with a room in the main building. As before the food was top class, the wine well priced and the staff efficient but unobtrusive and always friendly. The room (number 1) was big enough with an en-suite bath with shower and was well located overlooking the rear garden so away from the main road. It was also cool enough to get a good nights sleep which during the heatwave could have been an issue. One thing we liked about the room was plenty of cloth storage space (unlike many "boutique" hotels that take minimalism to an extreme in some cases with zero storage facilities meaning clothes on the floor or left in the bag). In all honesty the room was feeling a bit tired as was the bathroom and could do with a spruce up but the pro's outweigh the cons. For those who like a traditional breakfast i.e. waitress/waiter service you will enjoy whats on offer, it may feel a bit old fashioned but it does the job and as with dinner the food is excellent. Overall a great venue in a wonderful part of the country - we will be visiting again that is for sure.
