The Marché de la Criée in Marseille is a renowned fish and seafood market where fishermen come directly from the sea every morning to hold an auction for their goods. Local catches revolve around sardines, sea Bass, sea urchins, red mullet and more, straight out of the Mediterranean.

The market is at the heart of the City of Marseille and offers an amazing feast for the senses as well as a glimpse back in time. For a city that has been reliant on the sea since its inception, there is no better way to connect with the local culture.

History of Marché de la Criée

The Marché de la Criée was established in 1909 at the Quai de Rive Neuve on the Old Port, where it stood until it was moved north of Marseille. Many of the locals were displeased with his decision, feeling as though the soul of the city was being removed.

Eventually, the empty building was renovated to become a theatre, and in 1981 the Nouveau Théâtre National de Marseille, under the direction of Marcel Maréchal, took up occupancy. Meanwhile, the fish market was moved to its current location in the port of Saumya.

Good to know about Marché de la Criée

As the fisherman are arriving directly from their nightly catch, the action starts early. Even if you are not in the market to buy fish and seafood, it is a wonderful place to people-watch as fishermen, restaurateurs and locals all congregate and haggle for the best prices.

There are many restaurants around the Marseille area that purchase the daily catches to serve in their restaurants. It is more than likely that any fish dish you order at night came from the market that morning. Make sure to try the bouillabaisse, a local delicacy.
