Llandudno Pier stretches out 700 metres into the Irish Sea, making this the longest structure of its kind in Wales. The pleasure pier, like many in the UK, dates from Victorian times. Over the years, various entertainment facilities have been added, such as the Lamborghini-designed Big Wheel.

The pier is home to 2 separate amusement arcades: Leisure Island is located at the landward end, while the Deck Arcade sits over the water. While most of the pier’s shops, food concessions and activities operate shorter hours, it’s a pleasure to simply sit and watch the sunset over Llandudno Bay.

The Happy Valley Botanical Gardens is a landscaped park that occupies an old quarry. It is more than a century old and in the 1930s was listed as a historic garden of excellence for its alpine collection. These days, in summer, you can head up there to walk off dinner and appreciate the sculptures, trees and well-tended beds.

There are some steep climbs through the park, but these elevated sections make this the ideal place to watch Llandudno’s fireworks on Bonfire Night (5 November). The site overlooks the bay and so there’s an uninterrupted view of the pier displays from above.
