Weekend ruined by excessive noise in "family room"
Took a long weekend break in Harrogate for the crime festival, and this was one of the festival's recommended hotels, a short walk from the festival hub at the Old Swan. The desk staff were very friendly and helpful, the family room was spacious with 4 proper beds, the breakfast was good and the restaurant staff were helpful as well. Had we left on the Saturday morning, this would have been a 4 or possibly 5 star review, but the hotel hosted a wedding on the Saturday night, and the noise from the sound system in the function room was so loud in our room that we could hear the words for most songs and cups on the desk rattled throughout. When we phoned down at 11.10 were told that it would go on until 12.30am (it was actually more like 1am). When I complained that we had booked a family room, and that surely families don't expect to be kept awake until 1am listening to somebody else's party music, I was told that I should have asked for a quiet room at checkin. Our room was on the 3rd (top) floor, and was sold as a family room, and we had no idea it was going to be noisy in there until the music started, so I thought this was unreasonable. The next morning, the hotel refunded me £80 from my >£400 booking, but when you go away for a relaxing weekend break and come back to work tired and grumpy it feels like you wasted your time and money. As this incident spoiled my entire weekend, I didn't feel I could rate it any higher overall.

Getting a bit worn out.
My wife & I stayed here on a Thursday night. On checking in I realised that my voucher was for a twin room but I had requested a double room. The desk clerk was helpful but when he consulted with the manager on duty she came to the front desk in a foul mood and, although she did eventually change the room, she was most unhappy and not very pleasant about it at all! All the other staff we had dealings with were pleasant and polite. The breakfast buffet had a good choice but, with the exception of our poached eggs which were cooked to order, everything on the cooked breakfast side was not particularly hot. The room was comfortable but overall the condition of the carpets and decor was very run-down. This was our second visit to this hotel, the last being about 6 or 7 years ago and I would say that in the period between then and now the condition has deteriorated considerably. Would we go back for a 3rd visit?........Probably not.

Very close to the centre of Harrogate
The room was a nice big room (144) and the bed was very comfortable but very dated. The shower only dripped water out and there was no hot water, we didn't use the shower until the next morning . Unfortunately my stay wasn't pleasant due to getting a migraine and having to return to my room early about 9.15pm to find there was a birthday party and disco, just underneath our room and to be honest the bed might has well have been on the dance floor, I could hear every word to every song and all the guests talking/ shouting and chanting, which had some very colourful language to say the least!! The music did stop at 11.30pm thank goodness but still I have slept in many a hotels over my years were venues have taken place but never had to endure that level of noise!! I did complain the next morning and was asked why I didn't come down and ask for another room. This would have been an option if I hadn't been so ill with the migraine and I could manage to stay away from the bathroom for more than 5/10 minutes. They did offer a percentage of a discount, which I was satisfied with. The point I was trying to make was for the amount they charged us for the room the shower should have been working and we should have been informed that there was a party on until 11.30pm and our room was directly above this venue, so we had the option to move. The majority of the residents (party guest excluded) are of an age of 65 plus, so doubt they would have appreciated this level of noise!!

Cairn Hotel August 2019
Arrival was ok - a little short, but ok. Room a good size if a little tired, especially the bathroom. Location to central Harrogate great! The main problem we had was that we booked the room through where it did not mention the fact that there is quite often live music. Our room appeared to be over or very near the live music which for our room location was loud and went on until midnight on a Sunday. Yes there are signs within the hotel, but the noise was very loud. The breakfast in our opinion was very basic. Overall we would not stay there again due to the issues with the noise, the tired room and the feeling that the food etc. was all done to a price.

Very good 8.0
Easy car parking, good location for all routes, large very quiet and comfortable room, large, clean bathroom, good water pressure. Breakfast included was great, full english with variety of sides, great service. There were a few minuses: Not much food except sandwiches outside dining room hours in the evening, too few teabags and milk in room, shower hose had troublesome kink that cut water pressure. But on the whole, great place, good Harrogate Victorian northern wealth ambience, big, spacious, comfortable, good value, will stay there again.
