I was walking the Hadrians wall path I did 27 miles took detour to Low Crosby where I got a taxi to the GH. Whilst getting in the taxi I get a call the taxi driver says that’ll just be our people so I ignore it it’s about 8pm. I ask him to drop me at the brewers fayre few hundred metres down from the GH to get something to eat. I get another call in the queue and realise it must have been the GH calling so I call back straight away. “Sorry missed your calls I thought it was the taxi company I should be there about 9” I get a “Where are you?” I say I’m not too far away wont be long and she hangs up… I don’t think too much of it and arrive at 9.10pm I walk in where it says entrance and there’s no one around so I just wait a few minutes watching the tv. The front door goes so I look round and the lady is just peering out the front. I say hello and she angrily states why didn’t you ring the bell!? I say I didn’t see one she huffs and puffs asks me to fill a form in which I do. Gives me a key says upstairs opposite you room 5. Before I’m even at the top of the stairs she’s saying dont use both beds!! It’s £100 if you use both beds (twin room and it’s just me.. you tell me?) Opposite me at top of stairs isn’t room 5 so I look right she shouts upstairs angrily have you found it!? Run out of characters here but she demotes me to continental breakfast 😄 only come if you have thick skin rooms are fine maybe she was just having a bad day. I’m leaving before breakfast life’s too short

The guest house is rather tired.

A couple of the other guests tried to get into our room whilst we were asleep. They did not realise there were two doors next to each other.

The property looked run down on the outside, inside was dirty and all mismatched furniture. Upside the bed was comfortable and bedding clean

6/10 Okay

Very tired in need of TLC

As all the other reviews say, this is a very tired place in need of some tlc. The negative is that the shower did not have much hot water at all. The positive was a very nice breakfast. I would stay here again but would prefer it to be updated a bit.

Disgusting

Very dated, dirty and needs modernising. Cobwebs, Pubic hair in the sink and shower, stains on the bed sheet.

4/10 Poor

Property owner's record keeping was questionable when she repeatedly said we had not fully pre-paid upon our arrival. Although she apologized the next morning it was unsettling and left a bad taste. Bathroom was not as clean as we expect, building is in disrepair and needs some basic maintenance. Would not stay here again
David, 1-night trip

2/10 Terrible

never again!!

Double room with W suite booked, provided with single room & shared bathroom, advised Expedia mixed up despite showing the reservation details. Also told no other rooms available yet the two signs stated ‘vacancies’. The bedroom was very dusty, cobwebs, torn wallpaper & very outdated, very firm mattress & noisy road - even with the window closed. Large clumps of dust hanging from under the radiator. The exposed sink pipes were very noisy when other rooms ran their taps. The owners Anita & Jimmy were very friendly & very chatty.

Stressful stay in Carlisle

This guest house is now very dated and needs work to bring up to modern day standards. Jimmy is a friendly relaxed character and the breakfast was very good. However, this place does NOT take card payment. VERY unusual nowadays. Anita 'demanded' a cash deposit on my arrival which did not feel welcoming and it was fortunate I had any cash on me, having not been emailed or contacted by her to say cash ONLY was required. Room was warm and bed clean and comfortable. Rest of the room could of done with a good deep clean. No soap or shower gel supplied. Later in the day it turned out Anita had left voicemail on my phone saying FULL payment was required (I didn't get this communication until the following day) and even later still, KNOCKED on my door to say tell me where there was an ATM. I like to relax in a hotel/guest house room and felt this was an invasion of privacy. I got cash out the following day and paid for the 2 nights the following afternoon. I do a lot of traveling and have NEVER found in the last few years, that card payment is NOT acceptable. Even more surprised when cash seems to be DEMANDED on arrival when no communication whatsoever has been made to inform guests of this. Have stayed here before around 4 years ago when I don't remember all the negativity over payment, but won't be again. It's not worth the hassle nowadays.
