Top neighbourhoods in Venice

San Marco

San Marco showcases Venice's most spectacular treasures, with the gleaming domes of St. Mark's Basilica dominating the marble-paved piazza. Visitors weave through narrow passages to discover the Gothic splendour of Doge's Palace and the romantic Bridge of Sighs. The area buzzes with history as orchestras play at centuries-old cafés while the Grand Canal laps against ornate buildings. Upscale restaurants serve fresh seafood and authentic Venetian risotto, while historic cafés offer perfect spots for people-watching. Water buses connect every 15 minutes from nearby stops, making exploration easy despite the crowds. The area's Byzantine-Gothic architecture creates a fairytale setting for travellers seeking Venice's timeless magic.

Cannaregio

Cannaregio invites you to step off the tourist track and discover authentic Venice along quiet canals and atmospheric streets. The world's first Jewish Ghetto anchors this historic area, with its synagogues and museum telling centuries-old stories. Art lovers can marvel at Tintoretto masterpieces in Madonna dell'Orto church, while shoppers browse artisan workshops for handmade masks and Murano glass. Charming canal-view apartments and boutique guesthouses offer mid-range accommodation with authentic Venetian décor. Local bacari serve delicious cicchetti small plates alongside family trattorias offering fresh seafood. Vaporetto water buses connect you easily to major destinations, making this walkable area perfect for travellers seeking real Venetian life.

Dorsoduro

Dorsoduro offers an artistic escape from Venice's main tourist crush with world-class treasures at every turn. The Gallerie dell'Accademia showcases Renaissance masterpieces while the Peggy Guggenheim Collection brings modern flair to a stunning canal-side palazzo. Historic palazzos converted into boutique hotels offer authentic accommodation with warm ochre facades and occasional glimpses of hidden gardens behind ancient walls.

Santa Croce

Santa Croce offers a slice of authentic Venice away from the tourist crush. Historic palaces and Byzantine churches with ship-keel ceilings stand alongside the fascinating Natural History Museum in the Fondaco dei Turchi. Wander through narrow canals where laundry lines hang above weathered stone facades. Discover artisan workshops crafting traditional Venetian masks and marbled paper between peaceful campi. Family-run bacari serve delicious cicchetti and local wines for less than you'd pay in San Marco. Water buses at Riva de Biasio and San Stae connect you to the Grand Canal network every 10-20 minutes. Boutique hotels in converted historic palazzos provide a comfortable base for exploring this quieter corner of Venice.

San Polo

San Polo showcases Venice's historic heart with the stunning Rialto Bridge arching over the Grand Canal. The centuries-old Rialto Market buzzes with vendors selling fresh seafood and colourful produce each morning. Wander through narrow medieval alleys to discover hidden churches and ornate Gothic buildings that whisper stories from Venice's past. Traditional bacari wine bars serve delicious cicchetti small plates, while canal-side restaurants offer romantic dining experiences. Converted historic palazzos provide unique accommodation options with original frescoes and period furnishings. Getting around is simple with vaporetto water bus connections and the neighborhood's highly walkable stone pathways.

"We were pleasantly surprised with a lovely upgrade to our room! The hotel rooms are wonderful. Very comfortable and quiet. The lagoon is right outside the front door and is stunning at all times of the day. It is a bit of a walk to the main square but easily doable."

"We had a deluxe room and it was well worth paying a bit more. It was like a suite with a seating area then moving through to a bathroom on one side and a walk in shower on the other side then moving on into the bedroom. The hotel has lots of character and a beautiful garden where we enjoyed eating breakfast and having an aperitif with some lovely savoury snacks. The lounge area was very nicely decorated and comfortable. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was delicious. If we return to Venice we will definitely stay at this hotel again. It is so wonderfully located making it easy to get the train or the bus. There are lots of lovely restaurants nearby."

8/10 Good
"We had an amazing room and the hotel was perfectly situated and very very upscale. That said I was surprised by their mandatory 25 euro charge at the roof bar. Clearly offers one of the best views of the canal must be a popular terrorist sign. We are already paying a premium, is offensive. We were in the mood for two Prosecco, which were €16 each. However, with their rule, those €16 drinks were €25. It may seem a minor point but show respect for your upscale guests who have chosen your hotel as the best place to stay rather than a tourist destination. ."

  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may fluctuate based on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year, so having some flexibility with your travel dates could help you find a better deal on your stay in a hotel in Venice. For those seeking a distinctive experience, boutique hotels often provide a more personalised touch and may offer greater value. 4. Consider your location: Staying nearer to key attractions or city centres may offer convenience, but it often comes with a higher price tag. For more budget-friendly options, consider hotels in less central areas or neighbourhoods, striking a balance between cost and accessibility to the sites you intend to visit. You might also look into independent hotels located a bit further out, which can provide a more authentic and usually more affordable experience.
