Exceptional 10.0
New favourite London hotel (and chain)
Booked this place to be near a meeting and also have good tube access. It is literally a couple of minutes walk from Aldgate, so big tick straight away. I frequently have meetings in the City, so for folks like me this is a great spot. For tourists, equally so - you are literally 5 minutes from the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, etc. Plus - did I mention it's 2 mins from Aldgate already? Onto the hotel itself; the best way I could describe is would be like a funky, upmarket Premier Inn. What I mean by that is that it is extremely good value, but it has a little bit more flair and class. The entrance bar/lobby gives a clue to this straight away - a little like Citizen M, so a really nice area to relax, work, drink, whatever. The rooms themselves - a little small and functional, BUT the beds is comfortable, great linen, good wifi and TV channels. The bathroom is also small, but has quality fittings and the shower is good. For the money, this is excellent value in my opinion (as a seasoned London visitor and business traveller). You are in the price range of Premier Inn (i.e. potentially paying £110-150), yet the quality is a couple of steps above. As a now business owner trying not to burn the expenses, I believe that I have found the perfect compromise. Better still, the chain has hotels across many major European cities - and in great locations too (i.e. proximity to attractions or centre).

Good 6.0
All style and little function
The entrance area consisting of the lounge, bar area and reception is extremely stylish and welcoming. The reception staff were excellent, check in was a breeze only made better by the complimentary cup cake to celebrate the hotels 3rd birthday. The rooms are not enormous, nor would I expect them to be in central London, and the hotel is conveniently located, just minutes walk from both Aldgate and Tower Hill tube stations. My main issues with the room were although they look very stylish, they have not been designed for practicality, there's full height Windows, which in the room I stayed in looked directly into the office building next door, so unless you're an exhibitionist there's no privacy blind of any sorts, so the curtains were closed and the lights were on constantly. Apart from the hidden hanging rail ( it's between the bed frame & window,) and two small shelves above and below the tea area, there's very little space to unpack or store anything. The bathroom is small, well designed and functional except the trendy bowl has no plug, so you can't fill the basin, which I find surprising in a hotel that tells you it's designed for energy efficiency, you end up trying to shave with the hot water tap running. On a positive note, the room was clean, the bed was extremely comfortable and all of the staff that I encountered during my stay were pleasant and welcoming.

Poor 2.0
I checked in on Jan 28th, saw the tv wasn’t working but ignored that. I turned on the heat, it’s freezing in London in January, cold air came out. Walked downstairs at 2am, no phones in the rooms. After a bunch of back and forth the staff came upstairs and tried to fix it. They eventually moved me to a disabled room but that was after a staff member came up to my room to argue with me at 2.30am. Nobody apologized! Spoke to M B, “The Manager” (cant post personal details, in the morning and all he did was make excuses, essentially called me a liar and didn’t come close to even offering an apology, let alone any form of compensation. He is an atrocious manager and some of the staff here are simply incapable. The lobby looks impressive but I have stayed at motels with better customer handling than Motel One. Take the risk if you want!

Poor 2.0
Total rip off - wish I did a travel lodge
The hotel was ok, but at £100 a night well over priced - the room I had was on the 8th floor, no phone, only very cheap 'hair and body wash' in a dispenser and no way to open a window for fresh air (the air con was touted as a plus point but actually I just woke every morning a bit cold and with very dry skin). The bar downstairs is ok looking and comfy but the service is shocking - they clearly haven't got defined roles so every night I stayed I spent at least 5 minutes being ignored before anyone noticed I was standing at the bar trying to catch their eye at reception. I was really disappointed that they do not serve a sauvignon and tried to tell me a Sancere was the same (it was not, it was horribly sweet). Also the 'toasties' looked and tasted like something a student would make - cheap white pre-sliced bread with plastic cheese and caterers packet ham served with crisps. I wasnt expecting all the frills for the price/location but I would have had a better stay and service at a travel lodge.

Poor 2.0
Not my ideal stay or service
Terrible Giving stayed here before and it was pleasant I had arrived later than planned and when checked in found that the queen size bed for two people I had ordered an been charged for was actually two beds put together with two single duvet keeping the beds seperate made up. Giving the lateness of arriving we worked with it however the toilet then upon flushing was re filling up all night and was very loud. I reported this on check out to inform staff to fix the toilet and the response I received was I should have come down an reported it in a not very interested impression. I explained why I had not as i was in there for few hours having got up at 5 clock and checked in really late I was hardly in room to keep moving rooms but it had affected my sleep an my partner. I was not asking for anything other than to make them aware giving they asked how was my stay was. The most annoying thing about this was the staff member reaction to my report. Not at all what I expect and disappointed.
