First post lock down break and with new puppy
Staff could not have been better. Friendly, wonderful dog facilities and made to feel very welcome. Good social distancing in place and always felt safe. Breakfast always superb but tables could have been a bit cleaner. Overall very happy and special mention for Amy who was so good at looking after us all.

late booking because flights were cancelled
the hotel is nice, its very dated with rustic features. there are lots of stairs so not good if you struggle with stairs. the staff were helpful. you could hear people moving around.

Roof tops
Am pleased we can get upstairs ok as we were right up in the eves and the last set of stairs were quit step. Room spotless and clean and comfy bed but carpet was a bit shabby and we kept catching our feet in the doorway. Would like to try one of the other rooms and also pleased it’s dog friendly as next time will bring the fur baby

January weekend in whitby
We stayed in the cottage at the rear. It is a lovely property and very much to our taste. On the negative side it was very cold on arrival and we went out until it warmed up! A very minor criticism was that everything was present to make a hot drink, but no milk! Would it be too much to expect a warm drink after a 4 hour drive.

Oldest building in Whitby, fittings and furniture tired. Because of location, seagulls out and about very noisy early morning 5.00 am would not recommend this hotel for a good night's sleep as delivery and waste vehicles also very early.

Delightful hotel, marred by morning cacophony
This is an ancient stage coach inn in the very heart of Whitby. It has many original features that add up to charm. Staff are pleasant and helpful. Our room (perhaps appropriately called Wakeful) overlooked the street. The room was huge with a sitting room attached. The ambience is old fashioned but well maintained with lovely Union curtains. Bathroom had everything but tissues. The shaving mirror was so high that I had to stand on tiptoes (I am 5ft 11ins). Breakfast was good, with amazing kippers smoked 100 meters up the road. We had dinner too. The menu was imaginative, and our portions (of cod with a tomato risotto) were huge and perfectly cooked. Shared dessert was also huge and delicious. Whitby Gin was fruity tasting. Coffee is not brilliant. Our main problem was an early morning cacophony that sounded like the overture of a Britten opera (though set in Whitby rather than Suffolk). The clock chimed, the lorries and vans going to and fro, often reversing and bleeping. The drivers greeted others in loud voices. Crates clanged. Seagulls swooped and called to one another. In daytime it would have created atmosphere. At 5am? No thank you. Some soundproof double glazing would make a good stay great. Or perhaps a room overlooking the the courtyard behind would have been better.
