We have eaten at the Guy Fawkes Inn several times and love it so we thought we’d stay there. Staff were polite, and the building is just lovely and quirky, you really feel like it is a historical building which has kept the original feel. Our room was very very small -and although I liked the decor it made the room feel even smaller. My husband is 6ft 3 and even though it was probably a normal size bed he couldn’t lie down fully because of the footboard at the bottom of the bed. So this wasn’t great. I have also mentioned cleanliness……. the mugs weren’t clean, there were stains on the bedding and bath mat and I didn’t feel the room was brilliantly clean. There was also no soap which I found strange, we assumed the body wash was the soap?? Luckily we had hand sanitizer and soap with us so it didn’t really matter. The breakfast was good, we love the food here so we had high expectations. We enjoyed the breakfast. Overall I don’t think we would stay again, we stay in York regularly and have had much better experiences in other hotels (for a better price as well) . I appreciate it is a really old building and the attraction of staying here is definitely for the history with the building.

    Bring your own Cow

Had a nice stay in Room 8 at Guy Fawkes Inn & it was in the heart of everything so it was easy to get to the main areas that we wanted to visit so the location was perfect. The only downside for me was that at breakfast the room was really dim & dark, maybe they wanted to enhance the experience a bit but I could hardly see what I was eating to be honest although the breakfast itself was really nice. Also in our room we had tea & coffee facilities & a small flask of milk, but on the second day, after our room was cleaned they replaced any tea or coffee we had used but they forgot the milk. Reported it to a ginger haired guy down stairs & he said he'd sort it personally, but when we came back later on there was still no milk so a nice girl downstairs sorted it for us after we told her about it. Next day no milk again & the following day was the same so that's a black mark from me considering how much the 4 night stay had cost me. As for parking my car we parked at Sainsbury's at Fossegate for 4 days & it cost me £20:60 & is about a 7 minute walk away using the "Your Parking Space" app. Overall the stay was very good & would stay there again if I'm honest, they just need to get milk sorted as a brew 1st thing in the morning is paramount.....lol

Great location but very disappointing otherwise.

Attic rooms where unable to stand up straight except in certain places. Had to walk around hunched and frequently hit head on beams. Uncomfortable sofas but comfortable bed and adequate shower. Very poor value for money. Location was the best feature.

    Disappointing

Dirty bathroom. Very noisy, hot and difficult to gain access to our door due to tables and people in front of it. Poor food quality. Had to eat breakfast at another hotel. Drilling outside early morning.

    Quirky Hotel

Really pleasant stay at the historical Guy Fawkes Inn. Fantastic location, right in the city centre. We had caught the train to York so walked everywhere, and this hotel is so convenient for that. Really lovely staff, excellent customer service, including helpful luggage storage before check in and after check out. Clean, well equipped room, with really comfy bed, and plentiful drinks supplies. Breakfast had to be at a neighbouring hotel, but that was excellent too. The only slight negative was that the room was starting to look a bit tired - cracked floor tiles in the bathroom and a broken knob in the shower. Overall, I would recommend this hotel, especially if you want somewhere with lots of character.

Vey nice hotel and friendly staff. Our room was very nice and very clean. I would say the only down side was the location of our room. It was next to the kitchen but also in the courtyard where people were eating. And then at night our entire room was lit up by a light from the courtyard. Overall tho I'd stay again, it was lovely.

    Really lovely stay

We were a bit concerned following reading a few recent reviews but it just goes to show that you shouldn’t believe everything you read. We had such a lovely stay, the staff were friendly and pleasant, the room was spotless and the breakfast was delicious. Absolutely no issues whatsoever and would stay again!

Great location some of rooms very noisy

Historic, quirky pub with rooms, in great location near to the Minster. No reception as such and you do have to queue outside with people queuing for the restau to get in. We had a room out the back (number 12) off the courtyard which although large was very noisy and dark with no ventilation. The generator for the kitchen was outside and very noisy 7am-1030pm, noise from the courtyard restaurant until 11pm and stairs over the top of the room meant we were woken at 2am but what sounded like a herd of elephants returning after a night out. If you don’t want to be sharing your room with the dining guests sitting directly outside your window you need to keep the curtains and windows closed which makes the room very dark and removes the only source of ventilation. Large bathroom with roll top bath which unfortunately leaked flooding the bathroom and hot tap in sink which couldn’t be switched off properly. Having said all this the pub has a lovely atmosphere and staff were friendly. I believe there are some nice rooms with views and understand the food is good. I would however avoid room 12 if you are sensitive to noise (we had requested a quiet room when we booked!). There is no parking so you need to park in public car parks about 10 mins away. You can buy tickets in the pub however it isn’t always possible to park outside to pick the tickets up as the road is pedestrianised for most the day, so you need to have someone who can dash out while the other person waits.
