important do not stay here under any circumstances
I refused to stay here and am seeking a refund through Expedia. I was inside the building when a pigeon that must have been nesting in the building nearly hit me in the head. I ducked and it then splatted onto large glass window behind me. The place is filthy and a health risk and is probably no better than a Salvation Army hostel for the homeless. The bed had no sheets and I was told the poser mattress cover was the bed sheet! I left the premises and booked into another hotel which was clean and tidy. Expedia should remove the Portland from its systems and I am certainly making a complaint to local health authority regarding this place and also to local tourist board to get them to remove this place from their books. I'm very annoyed that I was tricked into booking such a disgusting place and hopeful to get a full refund. My advise is avoid booking this place if you value your health and safety!

4/10 Fair

Doesn't live up to the price.
First off let me start by saying that the staff were super friendly and as helpful as they could be (albeit clearly hindered by lack of proper management). The building itself is huge, too huge for the amount of staff that we saw working there. The room we were in initially was fine; it was small and resembled that of a room in a military barracks (even the smell). It was basic with the bare essentials (1 half-used toilet roll and 2 towels, one clean and one ... not so clean, no soap - hand soap or otherwise - and uncomfortable cheap (maybe even disposable?) bedding ... Oh and a very loud fridge). We had to move out of this room because there was a ceiling leak above the bath which was dripping very loudly and they put us nextdoor in a room that had clearly been very hastily cleaned with a lot of bleach, enough to induce a headache with the fumes left behind, and a shower that was not on the wall because the bracket had snapped off. The windows couldn't lock, so as we left the room the lock on the door didn't really matter (The room we were moved into couldn't even lock from the inside as the lock was broken) because anyone could slide open the giant (and I mean giant) window and take anything out the same way if they chose. Outside the window the balcony-type roof was littered in all kinds of rubbish. The bar nextdoor is very loud so don't expect to be able to sleep either. Self-catered? I mean ... There's a kitchen but provide your own cookware, dishes, food, ...

Worse than a doss house
There is a bed. mattress is just springs with a cover, the sheet was thinner than a voile curtain, that is all, no hangers in wardrobe but there is a full size fridge inside the wardrobe, the window was encrusted with black grease probably from the cafe extraction fan behind the building, the bath hadn't been cleaned, no soap. The receptionist bought me a kettle, cup coffe and milk. No other facilities, had to watch TV on my iPad as there isn't one but there is an aerial socket, the only light is a bedside lamp. Later found out this is 'campus accomodation' although no mention of that on the booking website, but even students deserve better than this. I reckon that the average cell in any of Her Majesty's prisons get better rooms than this, it isn't even fit to be called a doss house, it's far worse.

Although this hotel was cheap I would rather have paid extra to have some creature comforts like a bar of soap, a tv and maybe some tea and coffee. There was none of the above in the room, the toilet roll holder in bathroom was broken and tap in the bath was leaking. The room was pretty basic in all honesty and could have done with a serious brightening up to make it home homely.

Awful place Nothing in the room
Poor hotel in the centre of the city. It might be ok if you are a backpacker but for anyone else it would be better to seek somewhere else. Almost nothing in the room. 1 toilet roll and one towel was all that was provided. Nothing else. Bed was awful, very uncomfortable in all respects. Noisy area with night clubs hammering out their noise until after 3am so sleep not really possible. There was free wifi but that these days should be accepted as standard anyway. It does not make up for lack of sleep. I will not stay here again.

6/10 Good

Ideal location, free wifi, fridge in room
Don't expect this to be a 'hotel' in the true sense. It's a student accommodation block. Get past that then your experience can be a great one!!! It's got free wifi! Great connectivity. Bonus. It's so central to train station, cafes, bars, shops, etc. It's got a fridge. Shower had great pressure, worked well and water plenty hot. Check out was flexible so didn't have to carry luggage around Hull Staff are around in the day and helpful. To achieve a higher rating need to promote as 'hostel' otherwise raises higher expectations. No TV, no hand soap, no kettle or such facilities in room. Cleanliness of room may fall short of usual expectations. Noise from nearby club pounded until 4am : earplugs a must!! Otherwise seen as a base to sleep and shower and nothing more as so much to do in Hull!

6/10 Good

Good location, poor facilities
We had to go and ask for towels because there weren't any in the room. No bin to put rubbish in, so we had to just pile it in a corner on the desk. The shower had very poor water pressure. Bed was quite hard. Only upside is the location is right in the middle of the city. If all you want is a bed and toilet, its okay. But do not expect any kind of luxury.

Filthy room
The worst hotel we have every stayed in, the room was filthy, dusty, hair on the floor, mould around the bath, toilet filthy, no mattress protector, stains on mattress, window would not close or lock, no double lock for door. There was liquid in the lift, we don't know what this liquid was. When I advised about the condition of the room to the receptionist, they were surprised and said that the room had been cleaned.

Terrible expierance
We booked this at short notice as rooms where going quickly,I wish this one had gone too before I booked it.it is student accommodation and should not be sold or even advertised as a hotel.no TV which is not important.no tea/coffee making facilities. no toiletries. horrible towels but seemed as though they had been washed, toilet door would not close.very uncomfortable bed.we went out and bought a towel.and some bedding and soap.

Awful, don't risk it.
The room smelled so musty and obviously hadn't been cleaned properly, there were stains all up the walls. The bed sheet was so worn it was see through. There was very loud music blasting out down the hall way. There was also lots of cardboard in the stairwell which is a fire hazard. The man on reception was nice enough but couldn't do anything about our complaints, except try to ring his manager who didn't answer. We checked out 15 minutes after check in. Yes it's cheap but its definitely not worth a risk, it ended up costing us a lot more to check in to a different hotel!
