Top neighbourhoods in Madrid

Madrid Centro

Madrid Centro pulses with history and art around every corner. The Royal Palace stands majestically near Plaza Mayor, where locals and travellers mingle under red arcades. World-class museums form the "Golden Triangle of Art," showcasing masterpieces from Spanish painters. The area comes alive after dark when tapas bars fill with laughter and plazas transform into open-air living rooms. Getting around is simple with three metro stations and narrow streets perfect for exploring on foot. Stay in converted palaces turned boutique hotels or charming pensiones. Traditional tabernas serve authentic Spanish cuisine alongside modern eateries, making Madrid Centro an ideal base for experiencing the capital's vibrant spirit.

Salamanca

Salamanca dazzles with Madrid's most exclusive shopping along the Golden Mile, where luxury boutiques tempt fashionistas. Beyond shopping, this elegant area serves up cultural gems like the National Archaeological Museum and stunning 19th-century architecture. Wide, tree-lined boulevards invite leisurely strolls between upscale cafes and art galleries. Dining options range from traditional Spanish tapas to international fine dining, with reservations recommended for the best spots. Getting around is a breeze with three metro stations connecting you to Madrid's attractions. Elegant hotels and luxury apartments provide sophisticated accommodation that match the neighborhood's refined character.

Retiro

Retiro area blends art and nature with Madrid's most beloved park just steps from world-class museums. Wander tree-lined paths, rent a rowing boat on the lake, or marvel at the Crystal Palace's shimmering glass walls. The Prado Museum houses masterpieces that'll make your art-loving heart skip a beat, while elegant streets reveal local life away from tourist crowds. Metro stations connect you seamlessly to Madrid's highlights, with three stops serving the area. Charming cafes and upscale restaurants line the streets, offering perfect spots to rest between cultural explorations. Boutique hotels in converted historic buildings provide sophisticated accommodation options with classic Spanish character.

Moncloa-Aravaca

Moncloa-Aravaca blends academic energy with stunning green spaces. The ancient Egyptian Temple of Debod glows golden at sunset while students buzz around Ciudad Universitaria's neoclassical buildings. Casa de Campo offers pine-scented trails five times bigger than New York's Central Park, perfect for outdoor lovers. The towering Moncloa Lighthouse rewards visitors with panoramic city views. Student-friendly tapas bars and traditional Spanish restaurants dot the area, keeping prices reasonable. Getting around couldn't be easier with excellent metro connections and extensive bus networks serving the university and park areas. Whether staying in budget hostels near campus or mid-range hotels, you'll experience authentic Madrid without tourist crowds.

Sol

Sol captivates visitors with its historic heart and direct energy. The iconic Puerta del Sol plaza buzzes with life around its famous clock tower and Kilometre Zero marker. Nearby, the grand Plaza Mayor dazzles with crimson facades while the Royal Palace shows off its baroque splendour. Street performers and buzzing nightlife make this entertainment hub the perfect place to experience authentic Spanish culture. Traditional tapas bars and restaurants line the cobblestone streets, serving up local specialities like squid sandwiches. Hotels range from historic boutique properties to backpacker hostels. With three metro lines converging at Sol station and pedestrian-friendly zones throughout, exploring Madrid couldn't be easier.

ibis Madrid Aeropuerto Barajas

ibis Madrid Aeropuerto Barajas

6/10 Okay
"This hotel is not really near the airport, certainly quite a drive to the international terminal 4. Also, it does NOT have an airport shuttle despite being advertised as having one. The decor is a bit odd with clouds painted in white onto a navy blue hallway rug and scenery on the room's ceiling. One advantage is that there is a supermarket right next to the hotel. It's clean enough and the bed was comfortable enough. I would have made a different selection had I known that it did not have the airport shuttle."

Hotel Gran Versalles

Hotel Gran Versalles

10/10 Excellent
"Great stay, great staff, comfy. Here are some details: The room temp is completely in your control! Off, on, set your own temp, plus the window opens. There is a decent blowdryer, no iron/board, a typical hotel safe, TWO chairs, ample space for luggage, auto-light in large closet with mirrored doors, ok light in bathroom, but no bath exhaust. No workout facility or pool, but Retiro Park is under a mile away with fantastic run paths and an outdoor gym. Everything was very clean and tidy. The towels were thick and large. We are not bar people, so the fridge was pretty fully stocked, but if you're also not a bar person, just know the fridge is a little full and not super cold for your leftovers (tried adjusting the temp, but it was still just for wine/beer). I am already booked to stay there again because the lobby is nice, the rooms are comfy and clean, and the location was excellent! Also, all of the staff was just so nice. We were there for a week, including a weekend, so we probably met everyone and they all were great. My Spanish is not great, so it was a bonus that they all spoke English. "

Only YOU Hotel Atocha

10/10 Excellent
"I absolutely loved our stay there! So many cute spaces, clean and staff so friendly. We were greeted with a complimentary drink at check in and ate at the restaurant 3 times. Convenient to have a bakery on site, bar onsite and the decor is so nice! The room was a good size, nice balcony and large shower. Overall the hotel was a highlight of the trip, could hang out there all day."
